Have you ever wondered what inspires an author to write a story that touches the heart? I recently had the pleasure of learning from Shandra Ward herself about the creative journey behind her latest book, Where The Orchids Grow. Here’s a glimpse into her inspiration, the themes she explores, and what she hopes readers will take away from this beautiful novel.
What inspired you to write Where The Orchids Grow?
Shandra shares:
"The inspiration for this book came from a blend of personal reflection, creative curiosity, and a desire to tell a love story that’s different from what’s often seen. Interestingly, I chose the title before I even had a story. I’ve always been fascinated by orchids—not just because they’re stunning, but because of what they symbolize: delicate love and strength. I knew I wanted to explore memory loss within romance, but the story’s full shape took time to find me."
"A pivotal moment was when I watched a video of a plus-size reader expressing frustration at how plus-size women are often only portrayed as confident once a man accepts them. That really hit me. I wanted to create a character who was powerful and confident on her own terms. That’s how Mahogany Heart was born — a woman who’s lost a lot but finds her sanctuary within herself, not in a man."
"And then there’s Langston Rucker — the ‘bad boy’ with his own ghosts, seeking redemption and love from a woman who already knows her worth. Their story unfolded naturally from there."
What do you hope readers take away from Where The Orchids Grow?
"I hope readers walk away with a fresh perspective on love and what ‘happy endings’ really mean. We’re allowed to have them, and we can have them. This story shows that while we might run from love — or ourselves — real love isn’t something that’s lost. Even in tragedy, it’s enduring, and it’s built to last."
How long have you been writing, and what inspires your stories?
"I’ve been writing since elementary school, inspired by the many heartbreaks I’ve witnessed around me — from both men and women — and the universal struggle of wanting to get love right. Writing is also a way for me to work through my own battles with believing in love. There’s something deeply rejuvenating about telling stories of Black love — about Black men and women overcoming past wounds and discovering each other against the odds. It’s a love worth celebrating."
